World War II shells discovered in Pelham basement Pelham Police officers and State Police bomb squad experts removed two artillery shells believed to be from World War II from a Simpson Road basement Friday.
The Pelham Fire Department was called Thursday afternoon after man cleaning his mother?s basement found the shells. Police were called and learned that the homeowner?s deceased husband had worked at the Navy Yard in Boston in the 1960s, police said.
On Friday, New Hampshire State Police Bomb Squad members and Pelham police officers removed the shells and, after x-raying them, determined they were safe to transport and destroy at another location, police said.
The shells, now in state police custody, are believed to be World War II era and to have been in the home for the last 40 years, unbeknownst to the owner, police said.

Company created to help reduce power use BEDFORD ? A new company has been created to help companies reduce power usage for compressed air systems.
Air Power Analytics in Bedford manufactures diagnostic tools to help cut electricity use by 30 percent.
Large-scale compressed air systems used for a wide range of applications like drilling, blasting, sanding, vacuuming, feeding and fastening consume more than 90 billion kilowatt hours of electricity each year in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, more than 10 percent of all industrial electric consumption.
These systems are notoriously inefficient.
?The potential energy savings from compressed air is huge yet often overlooked,? said Ed Mitchell, co-founder of APA, who also co-founded telecom start-up Granite Systems.

Much-hyped Earl likely to pass with few repercussions NASHUA ? He?s finally close enough that much of Southern New Hampshire can breathe a sigh of relief.
Earl was expected to slam into the southeastern edge of New England on Friday night, but would bring only wind and some rain to New Hampshire, according to weather predictions.
That means a number of local and state preparation efforts may have been for naught, but that doesn?t mean the storm wasn?t being taken seriously.
Milford High School?s football game against Manchester Memorial High School was postponed from Friday night to Saturday at 2 p.m. Another football game, Bishop Guertin High School at Salem High School was also postponed to Saturday as well.
Meanwhile, officials were feverishly preparing for the storm in Massachusetts and Rhode Island where hurricane and tropical storm warnings still reign, though most hurricane-force winds were expected to remain offshore.
The American Red Cross deployed more than 350 disaster workers to North Carolina, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, along with more than 60 emergency vehicles, according to the agency.
The disaster workers include two volunteers from New Hampshire.
Nashua resident Bob Scheifele, who was initially deployed to the Virgin Islands, is now in Rhode Island where he?s working to help provide shelter and food. Concord resident Peter Fortier is in Massachusetts helping to coordinate the agency?s relief efforts with other emergency aid groups, according to the Red Cross.
Despite staying offshore and away from New Hampshire, not all concerns have been alleviated.
